What is IP?
The Integrated Programme (IP) is a 6-year programme that is offered to the top 10% of the PSLE cohort every year which offers the student an alternative academic to bypass the GCE O Level examination and follow a defined route in preparation for A Levels, the International Baccalaureate (IB), or NUS High School diploma. Each of these 3 routes offers a slightly different learning curriculum which caters to the differentiated learning needs of the high-ability students. Students who perform well in the O-Level track can opt to apply to transfer to the IP track at Secondary 3.
The IP programme was first implemented in 2004 where there were initially only 4 schools such as Hwa Chong Institution, Raffles, National Junior College and Anglo Chinese School (Independent). Now there are 17 schools who offer the programme.
The IP syllabus is designed in a way to cultivate greater flexibility and diversity in the education system so as to accommodate a variety of abilities and interests of students. It places a greater emphasis on the development of qualitative skills that extend beyond the classroom such as leadership, public speaking, and industry attachments. Students in IP schools are given structured support to develop their fledgling talent and interests through a wide range of electives or extra-curricular programmes.
What is IP Math?
IP math is a unique math syllabus that is offered to students in the IP schools which helps students to prepare for pre-university level examinations. The structure and content of the syllabus is crafted and individually determined by each school and thus might be different from school to school.
Comparing IP Mathematics with O Level Mathematics:
When we compare the syllabus content between the two, they are actually quite similar. As IP schools prepare students for the A level examination, some schools would include topics in the H2 mathematics, but they are usually done in a brief manner. This allows students to have a smoother transition when they enter pre-university education.
The differences between how the syllabi are structured between the IP math and O Level mathematics are more visible. In the O Level syllabus, we learn E Math and A Math as separate subjects. Some students tend to get confused by which skills and techniques to use when attempting the questions of these two math. In the IP syllabus, E Math and A Math syllabi are integrated so students are able to draw better connections between E Math and A Math allowing them to build a stronger foundation in their understanding of Mathematics as a whole. Usually, the IP Math questions asked in exams tend to be more complex and involve more critical thinking skills. Students with a weaker foundation in mathematics might find it hard to cope and keep up with the pace throughout the curriculum.
In the market, resources such as past year papers and assignment books for IP Math are quite limited as compared to the O Level Mathematics.
